Montegrande2.jpg

Early we’ll leave behind the urban comforts of La Serena and we’ll begin our adventure across the huge and innumerable hills of the precordillera elevations of our region: it’s Elqui Valley that invites us to be amazed.

EmbalsePuclaro2.jpgOur first stop looks astonishing: a 500 meters long and almost 90 meters high wall, the Puclaro dam, keeping 200 millions cubic meters of water that comes from the Andes. At the dam, we’ll walk through the curtain and take pictures of the lake, favourite place for a lot of young people that comes all over the country to practice windsurf and kitesurf.DSCN7693.JPG

Driving through the highway, across the endless green grapevines, a few kilometres from Vicuña, we’ll find the pisco distillery called Aba, one of the finest of our country. Here we will learn about the pisco process, from the grapes to the bottle, and will taste this exclusive drink.

DSC_0821.JPGLater, at lunchtime, we’ll have a tipical country meal in a classic restaraunt in Paihuano Village. But before that we’ll make a quick stop in a beautiful oriel, where we will enjoy the amazing typical landscape of the Elqui Valley: the green grapevines, the mountains and the clearest sky of the world.ArtesaniaPiscoelqui.jpg

After lunch, we’ll return to the road to Pisco Elqui’s Town, whose name originates from the famous Pisco Act, promoted by the president and then-representative Gabriel González Videla, the same law that gave the fundamental rules for making pisco in Chile

The next place to discover is Montegrande, a small town in wich Gabriela Mistral, first Nobel Price southamerican woman lived as a child. We’ll get to know the Gabriela’s House/School Museum and find out more about her life and work.

Montegrande.jpgAt sunset, we’ll end up our adventure in the valley visiting the city of Vicuña, Birth place of Gabriela Mistral. We’ll see the Bauer Tower, the ancient city hall, and the typical Plaza de Armas or main plaza, decorated with sculptures inspired by Mistral’s work.
